Approximately 85,000 Sacramento college students are the first people in the country to test download a revolutionary free coupon application to their cell phones that will potentially eliminate the need for paper coupons, discounts and offers.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - December 7, 2005 - Moonstorm, a Silicon-Valley based mobile software company, has chosen four Sacramento colleges and universities to participate in a beta test for Cellfire™, the company's launch product, announced Brent Dusing, cofounder and CEO of Moonstorm.

What is Cellfire and what is its appeal to the college market?

"Cellfire is the first-ever application that people can download to their cell phones and receive coupons and discounts to use at their favorite stores and restaurants," said Dusing. He pointed out that the students who download the application from Cellfire.com will not ever be buzzed or receive text messages from Cellfire. They will have the choice to click on their phone's Cellfire icon anytime they're out and about or just interested in checking out coupons or discounts at their favorite retailers.

"As media continues to become more intrusive, it was key for us to develop an application that would reside on people's cell phone that they could use by choice." Moonstorm's initial college efforts are due to college students' tech-savvy nature and high proclivity to use discounts on food, clothes, and entertainment. Games, ringtones, and other mobile applications are already incredibly popular in the young adult market.

Additionally, Moonstorm's own research found young adults have a high level of interest in getting coupons on their cell phones.

Sacramento Cellfire Beta Test

Students attending the schools-which include California State University at Sacramento, American River College, Sacramento City College, and Cosumnes River College-will receive postcards with directions for downloading Cellfire. Moonstorm also will also work with the on-campus newspapers through ads and editorials as well as the radio stations to communicate with the students.

Retailers featured in the Sacramento beta test are Hollywood Video, The Sharper Image®, Finish Line, and 1-800-flowers.com.

The numbers are staggering for both cell phone use and coupon industry spending

Cell phone use

Cellfire has created this product for the country's 200 million cell phone users who have clearly demonstrated that they are ready for content they can download to their phones. In fact, 56 percent of mobile users have browsed the Internet on their phones. Nearly all cell phone users have learned how to download ring tones and games-particularly the youth market.

Coupon industry spending

Seventy five percent of consumers use coupons, and retailers spend $7 billion annually just printing and distributing the offers. However, the paper aspect of coupons is becoming obsolete. This is supported by the fact that a mere 1.5 percent of the 250 billion coupons printed is redeemed at the retailer and that redemption percentage has been declining for years.

Are we headed for a virtually paperless coupon society?

Cellfire offers the convenience of "instant" coupons that can't be lost, thrown out or forgotten, because the overwhelming majority of people do not leave home without their cell phones.

Who can use it and how does it work?

Cingular Wireless customers will have the first opportunity to download Cellfire. The application allows the user to access a list of local and national retailers within their geographic region simply by clicking on their phone's Cellfire icon. Each retailer listed on the Cellfire application offers discounts or coupons. If the person is ready to use his/her coupon, all he/she needs to do is show the phone's redemption screen to the cashier at the retail location. The cashier then keys in the coupon code to the cash register and the discount is given. There is even a "call-in" feature that allows a person to click on a retailer's offer and the phone will dial the closest pizza location automatically.

There are numerous other national and local retailers who already have signed on and will begin to participate in the expansion to the entire state of California. The national consumer rollout is planned for the first half of 2006.
